CHELTENHAM CHAMBER QUESTIONS THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE LOCAL TRANSPORT PLAN

Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce has registered its concerns about the Gloucestershire Local Transport Plan 2011-2031.

Roger Marchant, the Transport Executive for the Chamber, said: “Despite the fact that more than 30,000 houses are planned to be built in the Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury area during the lifetime of this plan there are no major projects in this plan designed to deal with the increased traffic that will be generated or to tackle increased air pollution around Cheltenham.

“This situation is made worse by the fact that Gloucestershire County Council is significantly reducing funding for public transport whilst at the same time trying to reduce car usage. This will leave people living in the more rural areas no option other than to travel by car.”
Chief Executive of the Chamber Michael Ratcliffe said: “The transport plan proposes to remove the North West Distributor Road from the Highways Register, which would be a disaster for Cheltenham.

“Cheltenham Chamber of Commerce has lobbied for more than 30 years for a Full Orbital Ring Road around Cheltenham. The North West Distributor Road when built would form a large part of that Orbital Ring Road. It is time for major infrastructure investment in Cheltenham to reduce the congestion and traffic pollution spoiling our town.”

Mr Marchant said: “The Chamber fully supports the need for Cheltenham and Gloucester’s bus and rail stations to be improved and the parking issues at Cheltenham Lansdown Station to be addressed. The Transport Plan normally covers a period of 15 years, why is this one for 20 years especially when so much will be changing during this period?”
