‘PRE-LIONS TOUR DINNER A ROARING SUCCESS’
Cheltenham Rugby Club welcomed over three hundred supporters from the local and business community to the Pre-Lions tour dinner, hosted by Jill Douglas, Club member, TV Presenter and Sports pundit, in a luxury marquee on The Lawn at Newlands Park, home of this ambitious club.
Jill first introduced Phil Davies, Life Patron of the Club, who went on the 1955 Lions tour and asked him if he remembered the tour, Phil gave a short response, ’No’, which brought much laughter to the gathering.
Jason Leonard, former England prop forward, Lions stalwart and President of the Rugby Football Union was guest of honour and accompanied on the stage by former Lion, Donncha O’Callagham and All Black, John Afoa.
These guests recalled memories and highly amusing anecdotes of their tours and when asked who would win the forthcoming Test series, it became quite serious with a 2-1 predication for the All Blacks.
Joint organisers and former players John Little and Tim Clink, organised a fantastic event and John said, ‘how delighted he was to receive the support from so many former players, friends and local businesses.’
This fundraising event was a great success, which contributed in excess of £15,000 to the Club’s changing rooms project, in the footsteps of the recent ‘Pitch In’ Crowdfunding.
David Evans, Club Administrator and Funding Manager said ‘we are closing in on our £500,000 target, to construct six fully compliant changing rooms, followed by a RWC2015 legacy, Rugby Football Union, Artificial Grass Pitch at Newlands Park.’
