MAKING TAX DIGITAL – MAKING A MISTAKE?

George Osborne first announced the introduction of digital tax accounts in his 2015 Budget. The system, dubbed ‘Making Tax Digital’, will eventually replace annual returns and will be adopted by millions of individuals and businesses. Over the next four years HMRC expects a full range of services to be available to taxpayers through their digital tax accounts, and it offers HMRC huge opportunities for making efficiencies by transforming the way it administers tax. Employers, pension funds, banks and other institutions will all send more information to HMRC online, and this information will then be used to calculate individuals’ tax liabilities, which they may view online themselves.

Earlier this month, HMRC issued about 3,000 ‘Let Property Campaign’ letters to both UK resident and non-resident landlords who have failed to declare their rental income. This letter means that the investigation is “prompted” by HMRC, resulting in higher penalties applying if there is any underpaid tax. As the name ‘campaign’ suggests, if you are a landlord then this is a means by which you can correct your tax affairs with HMRC through following a set procedure, and HMRC are there to help and encourage you to get your tax affairs up to date.

TAX-EFFICIENT PENSION PLANNING

Tax-efficient Pension Planning
By Patrick Cooper, Director at Paish Tooth Ltd.

Over the last two years many changes have been made to pensions, and the Government hasn’t finished yet. We’re all living longer nowadays, and we need more money in our old age. Set this against a background of lower investment returns, and you begin to see why the Government is keen to encourage us to save more. Pensions freedom was first announced in 2014 to sit alongside workplace pensions and auto enrolment, as well as changes to the basic state pension. Further changes announced in 2015 will limit tax relief for high earners, increasing the amount of tax collected by the Government. We are promised further changes still, maybe even a radical reworking by abolishing tax relief on contributions altogether, and not taxing the pension when it is drawn. This would make pensions very similar to ISAs. These further pension announcements may come even as soon as the March Budget.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY – PROFESSIONAL PARTNERSHIPS.

It would seem that in business today one of the many targets we are asked to achieve is to our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). CSR is not just ensuring that we are legally compliant but about private, public and charitable sectors engaging in actions to make the communities in which we all live better places to be.

HOW MANY INSURANCE COVERS’ CAN YOUR FAVOURITE RESTAURANT COPE WITH? BY MADELEINE HEAVEN, JOHN MORGAN PARTNERSHIP LTD

Most business owners will tell you that a business can live or die by its reputation. This statement is rarely better embodied than in the case of a successful restaurant. It is no wonder then that restaurant owners invest heavily in interior design to create the right ambience, installing top of the range equipment and employing highly skilled staff before the doors have even opened.

“IF IT CAN HAPPEN TO NIKE – WHY NOT YOU?”

One issue that regularly comes up when I am discussing with clients post-termination restrictions and the risks posed by departing employees, is the view that it won’t happen to them and that employees in this day and age wouldn’t dream of leaving and taking with them valuable trade secrets and confidential information to use in their new business venture and to the detriment of their former employer. This is often a view that is influenced by the thought that with modern electronic communications, any unlawful use of such information would be so easily picked up that an employee would be unwilling to take the risk of being caught.
