New History of Business in Cheltenham Unveiled.

An updated Chronology of Trade and Industry in Cheltenham has just been launched by the Cheltenham Local History Society.

The launch event on Saturday 27th June included a short overview of the town’s 4,000 year history, talks and guided walks about shopping in Montpellier, the history of the brewery, the Wilson’s of Cheltenham, the trading history of the Suffolks and the Regency Villages of Montpellier and the Suffolks.

Compiled by Jill Waller, Sally Self and Sue Rowbotham, the book itself is crammed full of facts, many recently unearthed, about the history of trade and industry in our town.

From the first good railway in Gloucestershire running from Leckhampton Quarry, through the proud achievements of the aviation industry and the intriguingly named “Cheltenham Dripper” to the success of contemporary businesses like Spirax Sarco it’s a fascinating compendium.

The Chamber has been proudly at the heart of local business since 1904 and while It’s important to look forward to the town being at the forefront of technologies like cyber security and green aviation, it’s important to recognize the commercial heritage on which it is built.
