Local medical charity Cobalt will be accepting used Christmas cards from Thursday 2nd January until Sunday 12th January. Everyone is welcome to drop cards in carrier bags to Cobalt at Linton House, Thirlestaine Road, Cheltenham where collection points are set up.
Donated cards will be sorted and upcycled by volunteers into new greetings cards to raise vital funds for the charity. Cobalt provide diagnostic imaging to support patients with cancer, dementia and other conditions. They also contribute and provide funding for research, which leads to a greater understanding of disease, predominantly cancer and dementia.
Printwaste, who specialise in shredding and recycling have supported the Charity for eight years and will ensure that any waste including trimmings is recycled.
Kirsty Bradbury, Fundraising Engagement Officer at Cobalt said “This wonderful recycling scheme was started over 30 years ago by pioneering Cobalt volunteers who were thinking of the future. Today we are lucky to have over 90 volunteers re-making cards for Cobalt who are extremely dedicated and professional. Their hard work raises over £30,000 per year, a fantastic achievement”.
The money these cards raise helps the Charity to continue its vital work to support local people across the three counties with cancer, dementia and other conditions. Cutting-edge equipment (not routinely available within NHS trusts), delivers high quality images, enabling a more accurate diagnosis. By teaming up with Printwaste for The Big Sort the Charity can also do their bit for the environment and reduce unnecessary household waste.
Chris Robins, Printwaste said “We are delighted to be working with Cobalt on this initiative for the eighth year running. Christmas cards continue to be a great tradition, yet 1 billion end up heading for landfill once the festive season is over, the equivalent of 33 million trees. We ensure that any waste left over from the collection with Cobalt gets transformed into other paper based products”.
Cobalt greetings cards are available all year round from Linton House and other local outlets are listed on Cobalt website. If you would like to see how the cards are made visit: https://cobalthealth.wistia.com/medias/ya7v1trpv6
