The national survival rate for cardiac arrest is less than 10%, yet accessing and using a defibrillator within the first two minutes can increase the chances of survival by up to 80%.
Thanks to local charity Public Hearts, Cheltenham has gone from having far too few public access defibrillators to being acclaimed as the Defib Capital of the UK by the BBC, with over 100 now installed.
Several Chamber Members and partners have contributed or helped towards an achievement of which the town should be hugely proud, most notably Spirax Sarco, Evans Jones, CCP, No Child Left Behind, Chun Kong, Cheltenham YMCA and BID.
And most recently, Cheltenham Festivals. Public Hearts hosted a comprehensive demonstration stand at the Discover Zone of the Cheltenham Science Festival. There were over 10,000 visitors across the week, including many from local schools. They could see for themselves how CPR and a defibrillator work in combination and how to use them.
Who knows how many lives this might save?
