What you need to know and do
Todd Gifford, Managing Director of Optimising IT
With all the recent press, you would almost be forgiven for thinking cyber risk and security is a new thing. It isn’t. In reality, it has been the number one business risk in the UK every year since the mid 2000s, with the exclusion of 2020. In my experience, business leaders don’t generally want to engage with cyber security. They perceive it as a cost, taking focus away from service delivery and business growth. However, a cyber attack could wipe out any business for days, or even permanently, so it’s worth spending some time understanding the threat and what you need to do. 4-steps to cyber security
- Understand your risks
- Make informed decisions about mitigating the risk
- Implement those risk mitigation activities
- Review risks on a regular basis, as things change over time – technical risk, business context and people all make a difference.
We want to put cyber security front and centre and at Optimising IT we are committed to helping Chamber members secure their businesses against cyber attack.
Our approach to a cyber program for your business:
1. Deliver a top level management cyber briefing & workshop – all cyber mitigation requires implementation at top level to make it effective
2. Undertake a full Cyber Security review, aligned with ISO27001 principles. This includes: a. Gap analysis against cyber essentials b. Technical vulnerability assessment c. Presentation of findings and comprehensive report
3. Implement appropriate controls to mitigate the common ways an attacker might try to break into your business systems and data

Our offer to Chamber Members – free surface scan and 50% off Cyber Awareness training
As a Chamber Patron, we are committed to helping Chamber members, so until the end of June, we are offering our fellow Chamber members a real-world view of what their organisation looks like to a potential attacker – free of charge.
We will carry out a surface scan of your environment highlighting key issues that an attacker may exploit. The report details what the risks are, where they are, and information about how to fix them, enabling you to make informed decisions about what you may need to do.
What does an example report look like?
We picked an anonymous business at random and ran a surface scan. The highlight output below shows the overall cyber security health (1 is bad, 5 is excellent) and the number of risks found.
