United by the Challenge to Create a Carbon Positive Future

Faced with a growing energy crisis, record greenhouse gas concentrations, and increasing extreme weather events, the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) will take place in Egypt between Nov 6-18th.

At an international level, it will build on the outcomes of COP26 working on an array of high level issues critical to tackling the climate emergency, but it should be remembered that local actions that contribute to the success of the bigger picture are already being delivered right here in Cheltenham.

Last year, in Glasgow, COP26 saw an agreement that together we need to limit global warming to 1.5°C.  Businesses will play a vital role in tackling climate change and without their engagement Net Zero simply won’t be possible.

We are excited to hear that CheltehamZero member Spirax Sarco, a Principal Sponsor of a key fringe event at COP26 that brought business leaders and investors together to share ideas and expertise will be re-running it once again at COP27.

The CheltenhamZero initiative is accelerating Cheltenham’s transition to Net Zero and has a growing membership of 97 businesses and community organisations who have made a pledge to reduce their carbon emissions. Over the past year, we’ve supported our members with their journey to Net Zero and have delivered networking events, grants and workshops about carbon calculating, carbon footprinting, solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, and heat pumps. The business community is urged to do the following:

  • Join CheltenhamZero if you already have not done so
  • Raise awareness that it is every employee’s resposibility, not just the sustainability lead to take action
  • Think how carbon can be cut at your work and in your home

The Planet Cheltenham initiative is aimed more at homes, families and individuals. It is in its infancy and will soon launch its website, but it has already established an on the ground presence with a Climate Youth Group (16-24 year olds) and Little Planet Cheltenham (Parent and Toddler group). Vision 21 is currently raising funds towards the renovation of a building in the St Paul’s area for Planet Cheltenham which will act as an information hub about sustainable living for the town. @PlanetChelt
