Cheltenham International Film Festival 2020, 25 – 31 May

Stephen Frears

A parade of great directors and producers – Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Cannes Film Festival winners and nominees – are coming to Cheltenham for the Cheltenham International Film Festival led by the celebrated British director, Stephen Frears (above), director of The Queen among a long list of critical and commercially successful films.  We shall also welcome current Oscar nominee, the Polish director, Jan Komasa, who came last year and may be a perennial visitor who is nominated for an Oscar in 2020 for his latest film, Corpus Christi, which we shall screen during the Festival.

At this time, we are still adding names including a special guest to talk of their experience of working with cinema great Federico Fellini, whose centenary birth we shall mark by screening 81/2, one of the director’s classic films.  And, we plan a number of other events ranging from panel discussions to Master Classes in the arts & crafts of film and workshops linked to the Cheltenham Youth International Festival running alongside the main festival.

Another Oscar nominee coming to Cheltenham is the producer, Stephen Woolley, who was awarded a BAFTA Life Time Achievement Award in 2019; Woolley’s films include The Crying Game, Mona Lisa and in 2018, Collette, starring Keira Knightly.

The Festival will screen the films, many award-winning, from emerging directors from around the world.  A distinguished jury of film industry and entertainment figures will select the Best Film in categories of Feature Narrative, Feature Documentary and Short Narrative and Short Documentary.  The jury is led by Ged Doherty, President of The Brits Awards and co-founder of Raindog Films with Colin Firth; Dom Joly, popular British entertainer; the television comedy scriptwriter, Maurice Gran, and BBC Television Points West reporter, Steve Knibbs, among them.  We are also recognising the Cheltenham twin cities of Sochi and Göttingen by inviting the Film Festival Directors of each city to join our jury.

The winners of awards and others will be present during a closing night ceremony on the 30th May.
