Our fantastic supporters took part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge – a national campaign of ‘match-giving’ to charity and raised an astonishing £50,922 in just 7 days.

Donations given through The Big Give website were doubled with the money raised meaning the charity are able to fund the appointment of new Breast Cancer Research Nurses early in the New Year.

Julia Jenkins, Head of Fundraising, Cobalt said: “The money raised through The Big Give will be used to fund two breast cancer research nurses to enable patients to take part in research within Gloucestershire hospitals under the direction of Professor Iain Lyburn, Cobalt’s Medical Director and Dr Sarah Vinnicombe, Consultant Radiologist”.

Research into breast cancer is essential to find out which treatments work better for patients. It plays an important role in progressing medicine and making sure that we use existing treatments in the best possible way. Research can fill gaps in knowledge and change the way that healthcare professionals work.

Cobalt needs to raise £66,000 each year to enable breast cancer research to happen. £128 funds a research nurse for a day to develop and coordinate new and on-going clinical trials, which will in turn give patients access to the best care and treatments.

Dr Sarah Vinnicombe, Consultant Radiologist, Breast Centre said ”Thank you on behalf of everybody in the breast imaging unit for enabling us to recruit these research nurses and get all our research projects off the ground”.
